On July 1, 2026, a new chapter in the history of Toastmasters International began across the Midwest.

District 211 was formed by bringing together the proud legacies of District 8 (1940), District 19 (1946), and District 54 (1956)—three distinguished districts with more than 225 combined years of service to Toastmasters members. While District 211 is new, the values, traditions, and commitment to excellence that define our district have been built over generations of dedicated volunteers and members.

Together, these three districts have helped thousands of individuals become more confident communicators, stronger leaders, and more engaged members of their communities. Today, District 211 proudly carries that legacy forward while embracing the opportunities of tomorrow.

Where our Story Began

The story of District 211 is uniquely connected to the story of Toastmasters itself.

Within the communities now served by District 211 is Bloomington, Illinois, where Dr. Ralph C. Smedley began developing the ideas that would eventually become Toastmasters International. While serving at the YMCA in the early 1900s, Dr. Smedley created a program that encouraged people to practice public speaking, develop leadership skills, and learn through supportive feedback. Those simple but powerful principles laid the foundation for what has grown into a worldwide organization serving hundreds of thousands of members.

Knowing that part of Toastmasters' earliest history lives within our district reminds us that District 211 is not only shaping the future of Toastmasters—we are also helping preserve its remarkable heritage.

Stronger Together

The creation of District 211 represents far more than a change in district boundaries.

It represents an opportunity to combine the experience, knowledge, and passion of three successful Toastmasters districts into one vibrant community focused on helping every member succeed.

Together, we will continue to:

While our district number is new, our mission remains unchanged: empowering individuals to become more effective communicators and leaders.
